It’s easy to stay inside and hibernate our way through the cold weather.  But an active body is a healthy body, so it’s important to find ways to keep your family active even when the weather isn’t perfect.

We’re lucky enough to live within driving distance of a beach.  When we’re feeling a little cabin fever we love to spend a day walking along the shore when it’s too cold to swim.  It’s so refreshing about to be near the ocean.  Walking and playing along the shore a great way to stay active without even realizing you’re working those muscles.  Since we love spending family time at the beach we always try to leave it looking better than before we arrived.  It’s a habit I try to reinforce in my children whenever I can.  (All you former Girl Scouts can relate, right?)  We always pick up any trash we find, and the kids love making a game out of it to see who can find the most “treasures”.

Another favorite family activity is  hiking.  When it’s cold outside we just bundle up with plenty of layers and head out to enjoy the sunshine.   Once you get moving you hardly even notice how cold the air around you is.  Studies have shown that just being outdoors is very effective in treating the symptoms of ADHD, so I try to find as many opportunities for outdoor play as I can.  Hiking is perfect because it keeps the mind occupied while you exercise.  There are so many new sights to see, so many new bugs to poke with a stick.  I tell them to be explorers and lead the way and we’re off.

But when the weather just refuses to cooperate and there’s no hope of spending time outside I pull out the big guns.  Our XBox Kinect.  It’s a lifesaver on those freezing, rainy winter days.  We’re what you’d call a competitive family, so any time we can play against each other there’s going to be plenty of action.  Our newest favorite is Wipeout for Kinect.  Not only will you get a workout, but you’ll laugh yourself silly playing this game.

For us, getting outside and staying active means one thing – what are we going to bring for a snack?  This Nutty Popcorn that I found on the Adams Natural Peanut Butter site is the perfect take-along snack for an active afternoon.  It’s full of fiber, protein, and honey for a boost of all natural energy to keep you going.  It’s the perfect thing to bring along on all your adventures.

Nutty Popcorn Snack Mix

Be Active and Snack Well with Smucker’s *Giveaway*

Serves: 4
 

Ingredients
  • 1 (3 to 3.25 oz.) bag microwave popcorn
  • 2 cups mini pretzel twists
  • 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • ½ cup butter
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 2 cups mixed nuts
  • ⅓ cup Adams® 100% Natural Creamy Peanut Butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions
  1. LINE 2 (15 x 10-inch) baking pans with foil. Place popcorn and pretzels in large bowl.
  2. BRING brown sugar, butter and honey to boil in medium saucepan over medium heat. Boil 4 minutes without stirring.
  3. REMOVE from heat. Stir in nuts, peanut butter and vanilla until smooth. Pour over popcorn mixture. Toss to coat. Place on prepared baking pans to cool completely. Break apart before serving.

    Great recipe, problem is sharing it with others…yummy, I”m not sure I’d be able to stretch it to 4 people lol.
    Since I live in Florida, we are lucky that it’s not too hard to stay active in the winter months, I enjoy the cooler temps to run outside as we don’t have the sun beating down as much.
