Sophie asked me if we could make Easter cookies together. I almost cried right then and there. She hasn’t shown much interest in cooking in the past, but lately she’s begun asking questions as I cook and occasionally asking to help. Maybe it’s because she’s finally old enough to actually do a little more than just stir.
We made my favorite sugar cookies – they’re simple enough for even a five year old to do most of the steps. I had planned to just leave the cookies plain since I figured she would be on to something else by then, but when she looked at me with those big eyes and asked if we could put frosting on them I couldn’t say no. I made a version of classic royal icing but kept it fairly thin so it would be easier for her to work with. We spooned it into zip top bags and I snipped off the corner to make pastry bags that were perfect for little hands. Then, my daughter who has never sat still for more than 6 minutes at a time, sat at the table, completely focused on decorating her cookies for over 30 minutes. No help from Mommy was offered – I was too busy trying to get the whole thing on video. I have to say, these are some of the most beautiful cookies to ever come out of my kitchen. Now that was a fun afternoon.
